Volunteering is Healing

The first children who were ministered to at the ranch came as volunteers. They were not coming for what they could get, they were coming to give. It was within the selfless and beautiful relationships between broken children and broken animals that we witnessed our first miracles here.

Today the ranch has rehabilitated many animals that many of the kids who come are able to ride and interact with. Volunteering is still a foundational part of our program, and most riding sessions begin with a chore. This is usually 10-20 minutes where a leader and child work together mucking paddocks, pulling weeds, or working on various ranch projects. Involvement in these simple tasks builds value into the heart of a child.

We strive to teach our children that they can do something to improve the life of someone else. This fulfills an elementary need in every child"s heart. That is, the need to be needed. Oftentimes having this feeling of value is an integral part of a child"s or adults healing.

Adults and Families

Our Part Time Volunteers must be age 18 or older. If a youth age 17 or under is interested in volunteering, he or she must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian or approved as a Youth Volunteer. We love having families volunteer together, and much of our daily chore list is completed by groups of individual adults, parents and kids working side by side. Please keep in mind that we do not offer childcare for volunteers. It is the volunteer"s responsibility to watch his or her children at all times while on the ranch.

We rely on this team of volunteers to help our staff with the daily task list, as well as miscellaneous jobs that arise. If you have a specific skill or gift that you would like to offer, be sure to indicate that on your application.

Application Process for Adults (ages 18+) and Families:

  • Complete and submit the PTV application.
  • Volunteer Coordinator will contact you for an informal interview and to coordinate our schedules.

We recommend you sign up for one of our weekly tours if you are unfamiliar with the program before you begin to volunteer. Families, please be prepared to come together and work together while you are here.

Full-Time volunteers

As the ranch grows, so does the need for individuals who can serve full time. We deeply appreciate those who desire to come and offer themselves in service for an extended period of time. If accepted, all effort is made to teach, encourage, and empower each long term volunteer that comes to serve Christ in such a tangible way.

Requirements for Full Time Volunteers (FTV):

  • Must be 18 or older (16 & 17 year olds, see the next section for information).
  • Must be able to stay a minimum of 2 months and commit to 2 days per week.
  • Must provide own housing, transportation and food while here.
  • A phone interview may be required as a part of the application process.

Youth Volunteers

If you are between the ages of 13 and 17 and are interested in volunteering here, there is a process you can go through that, once approved, eliminates the requirement of having a parent or legal guardian present.

Start by filling out and submitting a Volunteer Application. You will then be contacted by our Volunteer Coordinator who will conduct an informal interview and schedule you for two work sessions with one of our leaders. After evaluation of those work sessions, if approved, the Volunteer Coordinator will contact you to arrange further scheduled volunteering at the ranch.

To ensure everyone has a chance to learn and is safe, we will be limiting the number of Youth Volunteers we have each day. Those teens that are able to commit to coming weekly will be considered first for volunteering, but we hope to include as many as we can.

Application Process for Youth Volunteers (ages 13-17):

  • Complete and submit the PTV application.
  • Complete an informal interview with the Volunteer coordinator and 1-2 volunteer sessions for PTV training (the Volunteer Coordinator will contact you to schedule these).
  • If approved, the Volunteer Coordinator will contact you to schedule regular volunteer sessions.
  • If you have specific skills or interests, please list those in your application.

Group Volunteers

As the ranch grows, so does our list of chores! We often have groups inquire about volunteering at Scatter Joy Acres. While those groups can be very helpful, our staff"s primary focus is on our ministry, and so we must limit the number of groups we are able to accept.

If your group is interested in volunteering at Scatter Joy Acres, apply by filling out a Volunteer Application. Be sure to include group dynamics (number of people, approximate age group, leader-to-kid ratio if it is youth, etc.) and any specific skills or talents your group wishes to utilize or share. Those skills can range from basic ranch chores to scooping manure to playing with kids. Whatever the nature of your group, we hope to find a good fit for you that will also meet a need at the ranch!

Application Process for Group Volunteers:

  • Both a group application and an interview with the group leader are required.
  • Each participant must complete a current Ranch Release form.
  • We will schedule one group per month.
  • Local Group Volunteers must be scheduled during our regular work week (Sunday-Saturday, 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.).
  • Local Groups do have the option of being "On Call," and we will contact you when we have big jobs arise that will require many hands or specific skills.
  • We welcome groups of kids and teens as well! However,we do require a ratio of 1 of your own leaders to every 5 kids/teens that you bring.
